Amazon to sell Hyundai vehicles online starting in 2024

Customers will be able to shop for, equip and buy a car at Amazon.com and schedule delivery through a local Hyundai dealer, the companies said. Hyundai set up its first digital showroom on Amazon in 2018. The new agreement also will enable buyers of new Hyundai vehicles in 2025 to access Amazon's Alexa voice assistant from their cars.

The Nevada-based materials specialist said it would remanufacture EV battery components from materials supplied by Toyota and recycled from end-of-life vehicles, mainly hybrid-electric models such as the Prius. Redwood, one of the world's leading battery recyclers, did not disclose details on value or timing of the agreement. Straubel said the company will supply battery components to Toyota from its Sparks, Nevada facility and eventually from a $3.5 billion facility it is building outside Charleston, South Carolina. Redwood also is selling remanufactured battery components to Panasonic, which jointly operates an EV battery plant with Tesla in Nevada.

EV sales in China, the world's largest auto market, increased 29% year-to-date in September. The global EV market showed 34% growth in the same period. "This (subsidies) is an important factor in the German market as nearly two-thirds of passenger car registrations are commercial," the market research firm said. EV sales in North America were up 78% so far this year.

Speaking at Reuters Events Automotive USA 2023 conference, Ganesh Iyer, chief executive officer of Nio USA, said the company is considering "any kind of partnerships" in North America. The brand also is considering the introduction of a new sedan, as its long-running Chrysler 300 is being phased out of production. Speaking at the Reuters Events Automotive USA 2023 conference in Detroit, Feuell said the design of the new crossover is inspired by the Chrysler Airflow concept unveiled at the 2022 Consumer Electronics Show. Feuell said Chrysler is still considering the size of a new sedan.

Stellantis declined to comment, saying it would wait for workers to vote first before discussing the deal. Stellantis will also offer $50,000 buyouts in 2024 and 2026 to UAW production workers, allowing it to cut costs by hiring fresh workers who start at lower wages. The UAW said the Stellantis investment commitments total about $19 billion, but that includes some previously announced plans. Stellantis has slightly longer than rival Ford to convert current temporary workers to permanent employees. That is on top of the $5,000 bonus hourly workers will get on ratification along with an 11% immediate pay hike.

Ford's Detroit rival General Motors (GM.N) on Tuesday withdrew its 2023 profit outlook due to the strike. Ford said third-quarter revenue rose 11% to $44 billion, with profit of $1.2 billion compared with a year-earlier loss of $827 million. The automaker warned it may experience a higher-than-expected loss in its Ford Model e electric-vehicle business due to ongoing price wars.

Sensigo said its AI-powered service platform and tools can improve the repair process for customers and techs, while boosting service center profitability, reducing repair costs and minimizing warranty risk. The partners’ first startup, Pull Systems, announced in March, manages electric vehicle battery performance. In addition to Porsche, UP’s investment partners include Toyota’s (7203.T) Woven Capital, Alaska Air Group (ALK.N), ARK Invest and others. But few of them besides Tesla's Model Y and Model 3 are selling at high enough volumes to support a full-scale assembly plant, according to a Reuters analysis of U.S. EV sales data for the first six months of 2023. But that market share was divided up among 103 different models, according to the Alliance's latest quarterly report on the EV market. The U.S. automaker, like several rivals, has committed billions to build additonal EV and battery plants in the U.S. In a media presentation on Tuesday, Cox Automotive noted that Tesla has surrendered some share of U.S. EV sales this year as more entrants hit the market, but still commands nearly two-thirds of all EV sales. Cox estimated that EV sales will rise to 8% of total U.S. vehicle sales in the third quarter from about 6.5% a year ago.

The company delivered just 1,348 Lyriqs and 47 Hummers in the second quarter, far below expectations, in part because of issues with battery module assembly. A longer strike could help GM address and potentially resolve some of those ongoing issues in its EV and battery operations, according to Sam Fiorani, vice president of global vehicle forecasting at AutoForecast Solutions. "A production stoppage could allow GM to solve bottlenecks,” Fiorani said. Wedbush auto analyst Daniel Ives said the strike was "a potential nightmare situation" for GM given it comes exactly at a key period of ironing out EV issues. In addition, the UAW strike in the United States could affect the flow of critical auto parts to GM operations in Canada and Mexico, which would hamper EV production there, Rinna said.

The focus is shifting to a new front: Synthetic graphite, an element developed in the late 19th century, but only redirected toward EVs in the past decade. Synthetic graphite could account for nearly two-thirds of the EV battery anode market by 2025, estimates Benchmark Mineral Intelligence. "It’s easier to set up a synthetic graphite production facility than it is to commission new mining sites for natural graphite” because producers can take advantage of incentives in last year's U.S. Inflation Reduction Act to build synthetic graphite capacity in the U.S. or Free Trade Agreement partners, she said. Other experts note synthetic graphite is generally higher purity and offers better and more predictable performance than natural graphite. Still, the construction of new production facilities for synthetic graphite, even with federal incentives, requires a staggering investment, said Novonix's Burns.

"Hybrid is a great alternative to a pure electric vehicle (and) it's an easier sell to a lot of customers." Interest in hybrids is rebounding as consumer demand for pure electrics has not accelerated as quickly as expected. Sales of pure electrics will claim about 37%, leaving combustion vehicles — including so-called “mild” hybrids — with a nearly 40% share. In addition to new pure electric models coming soon, "we are very bullish on hybrids going forward," a spokesperson said. Hyundai and sister brand Kia offer seven hybrid models, with Ford and Lincoln six.

The Mustang GTD is loosely based on the 2024 Mustang coupe that is priced from around $31,000. But the Mustang GTD really has more in common with the new Mustang GT3 racecar that is expected to compete next year at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, one of the world's premier endurance races. A spokesperson would say only that GTD production will be "more than 50 cars."

REUTERS/Phil NobleAug 14 (Reuters) - Ford Motor (F.N) on Monday named former Apple (AAPL.O) executive Peter Stern as the president of its newly formed Ford Integrated Services unit to help build new high-margin digital and subscription services. Stern, who previously oversaw Apple TV+, iCloud and Apple News+, will report to Ford CEO Jim Farley. In his new role, Stern will focus on integrating hardware, software and services across the company's Ford Blue, Model e and Ford Pro units. Ford now has more than 550,000 paid software and services subscribers, more than 80% of them through the Ford Pro commercial unit. "The basis for differentiation is shifting from the vehicles alone to the integration of hardware, software and services," Stern said.
